To activate Windows 11, connect the PC to the internet and open Settings > System > Activation. Windows may activate automatically with a digital license. If you have a genuine 25-character product key, select Change product key, enter it, and follow the prompts.
Activation confirms that the installed Windows edition is properly licensed for the device. It is separate from installation and hardware compatibility.
Check whether Windows 11 is already activated
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Activation.
- Read the status beside Activation state.
Microsoft documents several possible messages, including that Windows is activated, activated with a digital license, or activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account. Its current Windows activation guide explains what each status means.
If Windows is already activated with the correct edition, do not enter another key just to “refresh” it. Save the purchase record and recovery information instead.
Digital license or product key: which do you have?
Windows activates through one of two main methods.
Digital license
A digital license—called a digital entitlement in older Windows versions—is associated with the device's hardware and the installed edition. You do not need to type a product key each time you reinstall the same edition on the same device.
A digital license may result from a qualifying purchase, an edition upgrade, the device manufacturer's provisioning, or another Microsoft-supported path. Linking it to your Microsoft account can help the Activation Troubleshooter after a significant hardware change.
Product key
A product key is a 25-character code in this format:
XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
Where you find it depends on how Windows was obtained: purchase confirmation, retail packaging, a Certificate of Authenticity where applicable, an authorized digital record, or the PC manufacturer's provisioning. Microsoft lists the supported locations in Find your Windows product key.
Never post a product key in a screenshot, support forum, email thread, or public chat. Treat it as sensitive purchase information.
Activate with a digital license
For a PC that already has a matching digital license:
- Install the same Windows 11 edition previously activated on the device.
- Connect to the internet.
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Allow Windows time to contact Microsoft's activation service.
During a reinstall, setup may offer I don't have a product key. Microsoft says a device with a digital license can reinstall the same edition without entering a key; it should activate online afterward.
Edition matching is essential. A Windows 11 Home digital license does not activate Windows 11 Pro. If you are still deciding, compare Windows 11 Home and Pro before installation.
Activate with a Windows 11 product key
If Windows is installed but not activated:
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Expand Upgrade your edition of Windows if needed.
- Next to Change product key, select Change.
- Enter the 25-character key exactly.
- Select Next, then complete activation.
Check the status again when the process finishes. If the key is rejected, do not keep retrying random changes. Record the exact error code and work through the checks below.
If you have not installed Windows yet, our Windows 11 installation guide explains when setup asks for a key and how to select the correct edition.
Link a digital license to a Microsoft account
Linking is useful before replacing significant hardware.
- Confirm Windows is activated.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Your info.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account you want to associate, if you currently use a local account.
- Return to Settings > System > Activation.
- Confirm the status says the digital license is linked to your Microsoft account.
Use an account you control and secure it with strong authentication. On a company-managed PC, follow the organization's account and licensing process instead.
Reactivate after a hardware change
Replacing a motherboard or making another significant hardware change can make Windows see the PC as a different device. A linked Microsoft account and the Activation Troubleshooter may help when the license terms allow reactivation.
- Install the edition that matches the license.
- Sign in with the linked Microsoft account.
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Choose I changed hardware on this device recently when offered.
- Select the device from the list and follow the prompts.
Microsoft's hardware-change reactivation guide provides the current workflow.
Reactivation is not a promise that every license can move to another device. Transfer rights depend on the license and its terms. An original-equipment license supplied with a PC can have different rights from a separately purchased retail license.
Fix common Windows 11 activation problems
The installed edition does not match the license
Open Settings > System > Activation and check whether Windows says Home or Pro. Compare that with the purchase record or digital license. A Home key cannot activate Pro, and a Pro key is not a substitute for installing the intended edition correctly.
If you deliberately bought Pro for a Home installation, use Microsoft's Home-to-Pro upgrade procedure.
The activation server cannot be reached
Confirm the PC has internet access and its date, time, and time zone are correct. Restart, install pending Windows updates, and try again later if Microsoft reports a temporary service problem.
The key is already in use or blocked
Check that you entered the key on the device and edition it was sold for. Review the license terms and purchase record. If the key came from a seller, contact that seller through its documented support or refund channel. If Microsoft provided the license, use Microsoft Support.
Do not attempt to work around the message with activation scripts, key-management servers you do not administer, registry hacks, or cracked system files. Those methods can violate licensing terms and expose the PC to malware or persistent security changes.
The Activation Troubleshooter is unavailable
The troubleshooter normally appears for an unactivated Windows installation. Install current updates, confirm you are signed in with the appropriate account, and check that the computer is not controlled by an organization's volume licensing system.
A work or school PC will not activate
Organization-managed devices may use subscription activation, volume activation, or a company key-management service. Connect using the organization's approved network or VPN and contact its administrator. Do not replace a company license with a personal key without authorization.
Microsoft's Windows activation guide also routes common activation states and errors to the appropriate next steps.
Activation safety checklist
Before buying or entering a key, confirm:
- the seller identifies the exact Windows edition;
- the product description explains what is being licensed;
- you receive a purchase record or invoice;
- the refund and support terms are visible;
- the key is delivered through a private, controlled channel;
- no one asks you to disable security tools or run an unknown activator; and
- the PC meets the Windows 11 system requirements.
Activation alone does not prove every seller claim or establish transfer rights, but unexplained scripts and third-party activation servers are clear reasons to stop. Once the required edition is confirmed, you can review available software products and retain all purchase documentation.
Keep a useful activation record
After successful activation, save enough information to solve a future problem without exposing the key. Keep the invoice, seller contact, exact edition, purchase date, device name, and any applicable license terms together. Record whether Activation settings says the license is linked to a Microsoft account.
Do not store the full key in an unencrypted shared document or attach it to a public support request. If another person maintains the computer, tell them where the private record is kept and who is authorized to use it.
This record becomes especially valuable after a storage failure, reinstall, or hardware change. It helps Microsoft or the seller distinguish an edition mismatch from a transfer-rights question or a genuinely invalid key.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Windows 11 without activating it?
Installation and activation are separate, and setup may allow you to finish without a key. You still need a valid license for continued authorized use, and some personalization or services may be limited until activation.
Where do I enter my Windows 11 key?
Open Settings > System > Activation, find Change product key, and enter the 25-character code.
Why does my genuine key not work?
Common causes include the wrong edition, a typing error, no internet connection, a key already assigned beyond its terms, a major hardware change, or a temporary activation-service issue. Check the exact error code and use Microsoft's Activation Troubleshooter.
Do I need to buy Windows again after reinstalling?
Usually not when the same device already has a digital license for the same edition. Reinstall that edition, connect to the internet, and check Activation settings. A major hardware change or different edition can require additional steps or a new license, depending on the license terms.
